Dr. Bird was on Fox10 News recently talking about healthy foods you can eat when you’re craving something that isn’t so healthy. He talked about what you can eat when you really want a cigarette for example, or when you feel like you just have to have some salty chips. For many of us, the one thing we crave more than anything is sugar. It seems that, in general, people have a long-standing relationship with sugar that probably goes back to our childhood days.
Unfortunately, we have also learned over the years some of the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. These effects include weight gain and a slow immune system. So what can we do to slow down or curb these cravings for sugar?
1. Boost the flavors of the foods you eat
Cinnamon, ginger, vanilla, almond, and fruit flavors are a great way to stimulate your taste buds without eating sugar. By adding an extra kick to some of the foods you already eat, you can actually hold your sugar cravings at bay. You might try using some of these flavors in place of sugar too.
2. Substitute sugary snacks and desserts with fresh fruit
Fruit has its own sweetness and is a much healthier alternative to sugar. You can get creative with fruit and come up some delicious dessert recipes. Berries are especially good for us and help us avoid reaching for cookies and candy.
3. Wait at least 10 minutes before you give in
The next time you feel like you absolutely have to eat something sweet, tell yourself that you have to wait 10 minutes. Make that the rule. During those 10 minutes, drink a glass of water and focus on a different activity. This often works in helping to avoid the sugary treat altogether. If we can just fight off that initial craving, it makes a huge difference.
4. Start a new hobby that keeps you focused
Along with the 10-minute rule, focusing on some other task can help you avoid eating sugary snacks. It could be something like Sudoku or crossword puzzles. Reading a book or even going for a walk can also be good distractions. You might even make a list of 10-15 different things you can do every time you feel the need for sugar. Put the list on your refrigerator or on the pantry door so you remind yourself often.
5. Find An Accountability Buddy
This can be a fun way to help hold each other accountable. Every time you feel like reaching for a sugary snack, just pick up your phone and send a text – “I need chocolate now!” Sometimes, just sharing with someone else can do the trick. Your partner might text back something motivational or even a stern warning…whatever works for you.
6. Do Something Physical Instead
Some people have found great success by going for a walk or meditating when they get sugar cravings. Replacing your desire for something sweet with physical activity is a great way to retrain your body and help you become healthier.
