Integrative and Naturopathic Medicine
The terms “integrative medicine” and “naturopathic medicine” often are used interchangeably, but the two are different. Intergrative therapies are used together with traditional Western medicine. For example, you may take opioid pain medication to manage your day-to-day pain and use acupuncture to help manage flare-up episodes. Naturopathic medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. For example, using a special diet or certain natural anti-inflammatory supplements to treat your arthritis instead of using pharmaceutical medications.
Naturopathic Medicine is most often practiced by Naturopathic Physicians. Naturopathic medicine aimes to “treat the cause.” This approach is easily overlooked by some physicians who help patients deal with symptoms only, regardless of duration. Pain and weight management from a naturopathic or integrative perspective includes several aspects of treatment that can elicit a physical, emotional, and physiologic changes in a patient’s life.
Our Approach - Naturopathic combined with Integrative
Encouraging lifestyle changes in patients is one of a physician’s greatest responsibilities. Most medical conditions are not just diseases; rather they usually are always symptoms of imbalances in one or more areas of the body. Not feeling well as a result of a medical condition motivates a person to seek medical care. Too often, symptoms are treated instead of the actual cause of the condition. For example, oftentimes the symptoms of pain or high blood pressure are treated with medications instead of working simultaneously to resolve the cause of them.
Body imbalances can be defined as excess weight, unusual fatigue or weakness, irritability, headaches, depression, trouble falling or staying asleep, chronic pain, hormonal problems, digestive discomfort, etc. If left untreated many of these imbalances in the body can lead to more complicated diseases or illness.
Here is a perfect example: Pain syndromes sometimes persist because of extra force exerted on bones and joints caused by excess weight. We know the spine is designed to carry the body's weight and distribute the load during rest and activity. When excess weight is carried, the spine is forced to take on the extra burden, which may lead to structural compromise and damage. Unfortunately, the physical and sometimes emotional pains felt from excess weight aren’t the only concern. The longstanding symptoms of excess weight often go unnoticed until it's too late. Excess weight can put us at risk for a number of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer. The sooner we address the excess weight the better chance we have at preventing unwanted illness.
At transformyou, we believe the best approach to wellness involves identifying, treating, and, if possible, removing the source of the imbalance which causes discomfort in one’s health. One of the primary interventions in removing the imbalance involves creating an environment in which the body is provided with the best opportunity for health and well-being. This means we optimize the body's condition, we help make it more functional. Besides physical injury, imbalance and illness can be the result of such factors as poor diet, aging, stress, improper care of the body, and other lifestyle over indulgences and excesses. The goal is to provide the basic framework for better health. Striving for health when one has poor lifestyle habits is self-defeating, education and treatment are needed until an overall better state of heath and wellness can be achieved.
Health and well-being is best achieved when the patient participates in the process. They must assume some ownership and accountability for their progress towards health. The term “Doctor as teacher” is important in medicine. The Physician’s role is to listen, diagnose, treat, and educate. The patient’s role is to take responsibility for their health by making the necessary life changes while working together with their physician. When treatments are focused around this model, a person’s health is directed away from prolonged periods of discomfort and disability. Then the patient can enjoy a new sense of health and well-being.
